    At a glance

Eligible Golden Visa holders and EU, EEA or Swiss citizens living in Greece can compare private hospital policies. Some offers apply a special condition covering hospitalisation only within Greece. Eligibility, medical underwriting, deductibles, waiting periods and available documents depend on the insurer and the final policy. Check the geographic limit carefully before accepting an offer, especially if you spend time abroad.

    What may be covered

Benefits vary by policy. The final coverage is defined by the written terms.

    Private hospital treatment

Hospital room, surgery, doctors’ fees, medicines and materials may be covered within the selected policy’s limits and terms, for eligible treatment in Greece.

    Choice of deductible

Compare deductible options and the amount you would pay yourself before the insurer contributes, as defined by the policy.

    Emergency admission

Emergency hospital treatment may be covered, subject to the policy’s notification requirements, limits and exclusions.

    Optional outpatient benefits

Diagnostic tests and doctor visits may be available as an additional benefit, depending on the selected plan.

    Coverage guide

    What you need to know

Who can ask for this type of cover?

Golden Visa residence-permit holders and citizens of the EU, EEA or Switzerland who live in Greece may be able to apply. Eligibility is determined by each insurer, not by residence status alone. We check the application requirements and the exact offer before making a recommendation.

    • Evidence of identity and residence status
    • Age and the people to be insured
    • Existing cover and intended place of treatment

What does ‘hospitalisation in Greece only’ mean?

A Greece-only condition limits the relevant hospital cover to eligible treatment within Greek territory. It does not make treatment in your country of origin or during a trip abroad automatically eligible. Read the special clause and the rest of the policy together: limits, waiting periods, exclusions and hospital-network rules still apply.

    • Check where planned admissions are covered
    • Check emergency admissions and notification rules
    • Arrange separate protection if you also need cover abroad

    How does the application work?

After you provide your circumstances and complete the health application, the insurer evaluates the risk and may request additional information. Review any pre-contractual documents and the written geographic condition before accepting the offer. Cover begins only under the issued policy’s effective-date and waiting-period rules.

    • Complete the health declaration accurately
    • Review any exclusions or special premiums in writing
    • Confirm the geographic clause before accepting

When should you compare international cover instead?

Your expected place of treatment matters more than the headline premium. If you regularly divide your time between countries or would prefer hospital treatment outside Greece, compare a policy with a suitable geographic scope. An international plan is a different product with different limits and pricing; neither option is automatically right for everyone.

    Comparing cover options

    Where hospitalisation may be covered

Greece-only hospital policy: Greece, subject to policy terms

International health policy: Selected countries or regions, subject to policy terms

    Premium

Greece-only hospital policy: Depends on the individual offer

International health policy: Depends on the individual offer and geographic scope

    Useful to consider when

Greece-only hospital policy: You expect hospital treatment in Greece

International health policy: You need potential treatment in more than one country

    Documents and language

Greece-only hospital policy: Check the available English documents and final wording

International health policy: Check the language and final wording of each offer

    What affects the premium?

    Age

Premiums can vary by age band and by the number of people insured.

    Deductible

The amount you contribute to eligible costs affects the premium and your out-of-pocket exposure.

    Hospital room

Room category and the hospital network may affect price and coverage.

    Geographic scope

Greece-only and international cover have different terms and may be priced differently; compare actual written offers.

    Optional outpatient cover

Adding consultations or diagnostics can change the overall premium.

    Medical history

Underwriting may result in exclusions, special terms or an adjusted premium.

There is no single published premium for every applicant. Ask for a written offer showing the deductible, limits, exclusions and geographic condition.

    Quote checklist

    • Identity document and information about your residence status
    • Ages and number of people to insure
    • The Greek city where you live and any time spent abroad
    • Accurate medical-history information requested by the insurer
    • Your preferred deductible and hospital-room category
    • Whether you need hospital cover outside Greece
    Coverage limits

    What may not be covered?

Exclusions vary by policy and are set out in the general and special terms.

    Hospitalisation outside Greece

A Greece-only special condition does not cover hospitalisation abroad under that policy.

    Pre-existing conditions

Conditions may be excluded or subject to specific written terms following underwriting.

    Waiting periods

Some benefits may not begin immediately. Check the exact waiting periods in the offer.

    Non-included benefits

Outpatient or other additional services are not automatically included in hospital-only cover.

    If you need to claim

How do you make a claim?

    01

    Check the location and terms

Confirm that the proposed admission is within Greece and review network, limits and any pre-authorisation requirement.

    02

    Contact the insurer or broker

For a planned admission, request guidance in advance. In an emergency, follow the notification procedure in the policy.

    03

    Keep the documents

Retain admission records, invoices and medical documentation required for a claim, and ask about direct billing where available.

    Who is it for?

    • Golden Visa residence-permit holders living in Greece
    • EU, EEA and Swiss citizens residing in Greece, including those applying for a registration certificate
    • Residents comparing private hospital cover alongside their existing health arrangements
    • Families relocating to Greece who want to assess private hospital options

    Before you apply

    Common mistakes to avoid

    Missing the geographic condition

Do not assume hospital treatment in another country is covered.

    Confusing different insurance purposes

A hospital policy may not meet a separate residence-permit documentation requirement.

    Leaving out medical information

Accurately disclose requested medical history to avoid disputes about eligibility or claims.

    Ignoring travel needs

If you travel often, consider separate travel or international cover rather than assuming this policy follows you.

    Choosing by premium alone

Compare deductibles, networks, limits, exclusions and written terms as well as cost.

    Golden Visa

An investor residence permit; holding one does not by itself guarantee acceptance for insurance.

    Special condition

A written policy condition that changes or limits standard terms, such as the geographic scope of hospital cover.

    Pre-contractual documents

Information supplied before you accept an offer to help you assess cover, limits and exclusions.

    Underwriting

The insurer’s assessment of an application and any resulting terms.

    Deductible
